Dean Travlos’ Lecture on the Current Financial Crisis

In the framework of the Special Event "The Crisis of the Financial Markets: The repercussions on the Greek Economy" organized for the current students and alumni of the MSc in Business for Lawyers Program

Professor Nickolaos G. Travlos, Dean of ALBA, gave a speech in a special event organized by the MSc in Business for Lawyers Department, titled “The Crisis of the Financial Markets: The repercussions on the Greek Economy”. The event took place on May 7th, 2009 at the premises of the Educational Centre of the National Bank of Greece (30, Omirou Str.)

Guest Lecture

On Monday February 9, the Law 10 Class had the pleasure of attending a lecture given by Mr. Andreas Feidakis, Head of the Asset Management Unit and Financial Analyst of the Bank of Greece. Invited by Dr. Aspasia Tsaoussi in the context of the Business Economics course, Mr. Feidakis spoke on the topic of “Bonds and the Financial Crisis in Practice”, giving many illustrative examples from the Greek bond market and evoking a vivid in-class discussion with our Law-10 students. A key area of focus was the recent 2008 crisis and its impact on Eurozone countries. The speaker explained Greece’s performance relative to the EU benchmark and clarified the interconnectedness of financial markets with the stock market, the housing market, etc.

Computer Simulation

On Wednesday January 7, as part of the Strategic Thinking and the Law course, the MSc in Business for Lawyers 9 class conducted a custom made computer simulation game in order to experiment with different strategies in conflict and to develop strategic insight prior to the theoretical teaching in class. The participation was lively and the lessons learnt provided a valuable springboard for the key strategic concepts to follow in the capstone course of the program.

Strategic Litigation and Practice Trial

On Tuesday January 27, the MSc in Bussiness for Lawyers 9 students had their last class of the program, for the Strategic Thinking and the Law course. It was conducted at the Vouliagmeni premises and had a celebratory feeling as the students engaging in a practice trial based on real life business data, which they had been preparing for intensely for three weeks prior. The ‘trial’ generated a lot of excitement and enthusiasm to participants, judges, and audience alike, while it conferred valuable lessons for the preparation and conduct of litigation in terms of strategy, negotiation, and advocacy. The students engaged in hands-on application of their newly acquired business knowledge in actual litigation, thus bridging the gap between business and law, which ALBA’s MSc in Business for Lawyers program is renowned for. The class was honored by the presence of ALBA’s Dean, Prof. Travlos, who wished the graduating students a productive and fulfilling professional life.

By everybody’s account it was a fitting end to the program following a full year’s intense, but highly rewarding effort on behalf of the participants.

January 17-18, 2009 

Team Building Workshop

ALBA considers effective teamwork to be a key factor for future success for all students. This year team building workshop took place on January 17-18, 2009 in Sofiko, for the new class of the ALBA MSc in Business for Lawyers 10 in cooperation with Summit Exploring S.A. The theoretical part of the workshop was mainly based on Team Process and Emotional Intelligence, while a newly introduced activity of the drum circle was very impressive.

Mergers and Acquisitions & Antitrust Law Workshop

On 17 November 2008, as part of the Antitrust Law and Mergers & Acquisitions modules of the MSc in Business for Lawyers programme, a workshop was organised on the "Economics of Mergers". Dr. Kokkoris presented economic techniques in the competition assessment of mergers covering a number of interesting and controversial issues including Price Concentration Analysis, Elasticity Analysis, Critical Loss Analysis etc. Dr. Papakonstantinou presented important legal issues related to the definition of a merger/joint venture as well as to the notification of mergers to the Hellenic Competition Commission. Dr Trouli, Head of Legal Unit of the Hellenic Competition Commission, the guest speaker, presented the authority's approach towards merger assessment.

The participants had the opportunity to receive an "insider's perspective" on both the Greek (by Dr. Troulli), but also the UK (by Dr. Kokkoris) approach to merger assessment by national authorities. The Workshop had a high participation rate and lively discussion followed the presentations.

ALBA Career Development Day for the MSc in Business for Lawyers Students

The MSc in Business for Lawyers Program visits London! 

The ALBA MSc in Business for Lawyers Program organized an educational trip to London on February 7-10, 2008. Twenty students along with the Dean of ALBA, Nickolaos G. Travlos, as well as the Program administrators, visited London in order to gain first-hand experience of the legal practice in another European country, and to enjoy a variety of cultural activities. During their stay in London, the team visited the Office of Fair Trading, the UK's consumer and competition regulatory authority, the Law Offices of Farrer & Co. and the Law firm Norton Rose, in order to gain a complete and thorough understanding on the legal business area from a state legal body, a successful law firm with a distinguished reputation and long history, as well as a leading contemporary international legal firm.
